proverbs 1.

probably the most famous verse of all time:

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.” Proverbs 1:7

[i’m only going to focus on the first part of this verse, because it’s the one that my mom always quotes. ]

what does it mean to ‘fear’ God in this context. i don’t think it’s only about being afraid of God, but also respecting Him. i mean what does being afraid of God have to do with gaining knowledge?

if you search the word ‘fear’ on you’ll actually get a definition that says “reverential awe, especially toward God: the fear of God.  Synonyms: awe, respect, reverence, veneration.”

so really the word fear here is pretty much falling down on our nears in respect and awe of God’s AWEsome-ness (ahaha, see what i did there?)

so if we want to be wise, we have to know that wisdom is from God and God is wisdom. understand that he’s the greatest, and no one can be any wiser than He is… respect the fact that He’s much greater than us. and you’ll get wisdom. and it’s not like a  one time “seek”. you have to constantly seek for wisdom in God…. and with “enough” respect and seeking you’ll get wisdom….

i’m making this sound like we have to gain it, in a bad way. but the thing is, seeking and respecting is only the BEGINNING of wisdom. i’m not really sure what the steps are after the beginning, but by the time you get to the beginning, you’ll probably have the wisdom to figure it out.
