proverbs 3.

“We discipline you because we love you!”

you have no idea how many times i’ve heard this phrase in my life, but honestly i still don’t really take it into consideration that it’s genuinely for my own good. i think that parents discipline you because they have the right to. for example: when teachers tell me that i’m in charge of the classroom/discussion, i take it seriously because i’m the one in charge, and i say things and get people in trouble when it’s really not all that necessary. this one time we had a house competition for our school, and i was one of the refs. i felt really important being the ref that i took points away really harshly.

so if we were to relate this with our parents, we can say that they’re taking advantage of their ability of leadership and disciplining us because they can.

“My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.” Proverbs 3:11-12

so in this verse, i think God’s referring to Himself as the Father, and the son as us.

it’s easier for me to understand that God disciplines us because he loves us AND he’s proud of us. i think as a child, the only thing i want to hear my parents say is that they’re proud of me, and how i’m doing at school.

it’s not like our parents misuse their power of authority, but the problem is us. we’re self centered, we want things to happen in our own way. that’s why we complain and say things that we don’t actually mean to our parents. but when you really think it through, they’re really doing this out of love. i mean if you don’t like someone, would you actually take the time and energy to correct their mistakes?
